CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)

A course of cognitive therapy will usually last from 6-20 sessions. Sessions are conducted weekly, to begin with. In the final stages of therapy, you may book fortnightly or monthly session.

In CBT session the therapist works with you, collaboratively, to reach desired outcomes (goals).

In the first few sessions, we will formulate the problem, this is done by looking at triggers, thinking, emotions, physical sensations and behaviours. With the help of your therapist, you’ll find patterns emerging in your formulation which are driven by negative thoughts and belief systems. These patterns and formulations are typically maintained by certain behaviours. There will be tasks set for you to complete in between session (homework).

In the next stage of therapy, your therapist will work with you to develop strategies to break those patterns in your formulation.

Final stages of therapy are to ensure those strategies are effective and delivering the results you require. Once you have the problem solved any remaining difficulties, your therapist will then look at a relapse prevention plan with you before therapy ends.
